Getting to Know Your LER

The Lands, Environment and Resources (LER) Department (formerly Lands Department) is effectively governing our NCN lands and resources while faithfully preserving our traditional values. It's mandate is to balance the economic development of our lands with the province and industry's interests in NCN's resources, while preserving our traditional way of life and the sacred ecosystems of our territory.

LER manages and trains our NCN Land Guardians - the protectors of our traditional landsLER conducts on-the-land and field research/training
We use traditional knowledge from our Elders to ensure respect of the landNCN/LER was key to developing our Land Code
LER was established in April 2019 - formed by a merger of the Lands department and Resource Management BoardOur land use planning is focused on 2.3 million hectares of NCN territory
We protect Nehetho traditional, cultural and historic sitesLER is responsible for informing Citizens of all Lands and Resources activities, policies and territory information
We work to ensure treaty and inherent rights are protected and honouredFishing, trapping, country foods, hunting and traditional programs are managed by LER
We manage business and resource developmentWe promote healthy and responsible land use
We are mapping and using digital GIS systems to record our territoryOur duties are in keeping with the respect and beliefs of our Nehetho ancestors
We continually improve the ways we govern NCN Lands
LER is overseen by Chief and Council and is responsible to all NCN Citizens
